The Rockefeller Institute of Government has released a new report examining the economic and social impact of nonprofit disability service providers across New York State, using data from New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID).
The findings are significant.
In 2023, 408 nonprofit disability service providers reported $9.0 billion in revenue, generating a total of $15.6 billion in economic output statewide. This includes:
- $9.0 billion in provider revenue
- $2.0 billion in supplier output
- $4.6 billion in employee spending
Together, these providers supported 194,186 full-time jobs and contributed $2.4 billion in federal and state tax revenue.
The report also highlights the economic impact of NYSID’s 99 member agencies. In 2023, NYSID generated $470 million in total economic impact, based on $291.6 million in contracts. Member agencies employed 4,794 individuals with disabilities, who collectively worked more than 3.6 million hours.
Economic benefits were realized across every region of the state, with the largest impact in New York City, followed by the Mid-Hudson and Long Island regions. NYSID’s impact was especially strong in Long Island and the Capital Region, reflecting state contracting activity through the Preferred Source Program.
Prepared for the New York Alliance for Inclusion & Innovation and NYSID, this report underscores the critical role disability service providers play — not only in supporting individuals with disabilities, but also in strengthening New York’s economy.
