The Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Western New York (DDAWNY) stands firmly against the use of the “R-word” in any setting. This term has a long and painful history for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is a slur that diminishes dignity, reinforces stigma, and causes real harm to individuals, families, and the professionals who support them.

Our members see every day how respect and inclusion strengthen communities. We also know that language shapes attitudes. When hurtful words are used casually—or as insults—they reopen old wounds and undermine decades of work toward acceptance and understanding.

This issue is not about politics. It is about basic humanity. People with disabilities deserve to be spoken about with dignity, never as a punchline or a put-down.

DDAWNY calls on all leaders and community members to use language that affirms the worth of every person. Together, we can continue building a community where people with disabilities are valued, respected, and included in every way.
